Before You Spend Money on Your IT, Get a Second Opinion
Independent, practical IT advice from an experienced IT professional
Have you been told that your computer needs replacing?
Has someone recommended an expensive repair or upgrade?
Are you struggling with Microsoft 365, Windows, backups, networking or another technical problem and aren’t sure what to do?
Before you spend money, get an independent second opinion.
Byte Digital has been providing computer and IT services to individuals and small businesses for more than 30 years. I can examine your problem remotely, explain what is actually happening, and help you decide what needs to be done — and what doesn’t.
A second opinion can save you more than money
Technology problems are often confusing because there can be several possible explanations — and several possible solutions.
You may have been given technical advice that you don’t fully understand. You may simply want to know whether replacing something is really necessary.
I can help you assess situations such as:
-
- “My computer is very slow. Do I need a new one?”
-
- “The repair shop says my hard drive/SSD needs replacing. Is that really the problem?”
-
- “Windows is showing an error. Is it something I need to worry about?”
-
- “I’m being asked to upgrade my Microsoft 365 subscription. Do I actually need to?”
-
- “Is my backup system good enough if my computer or server fails?”
-
- “I’ve been given a quotation for IT work. Does it make sense?”
-
- “Something isn’t working, but I don’t know whether the problem is hardware, Windows, networking or software.”
-
- “I’m considering buying a new computer. What do I actually need?”
These are examples rather than a fixed list. If it involves a computer, network, Microsoft 365 or small-business IT, it is worth asking.
What happens during the consultation?
The initial consultation is 30 minutes and costs R490.
Before the consultation, you can provide screenshots, photographs, error messages or other information that may help explain the problem.
During the consultation I will:
-
- Establish what the problem actually appears to be.
-
- Examine the relevant information or, where appropriate, connect remotely to the computer.
-
- Explain the likely cause in straightforward language.
-
- Identify what needs to be done — and what doesn’t.
-
- Give you a practical recommendation for the next step.
Some problems can be resolved during the consultation.
If further investigation or technical work is required, I’ll tell you what is involved before proceeding. The purpose of the initial consultation is not to sell you equipment or unnecessary work.
You don’t have to become a Byte Digital client
The consultation is an independent assessment.
If you simply want to understand a problem or check whether advice you’ve received is reasonable, that’s fine.
If you subsequently want Byte Digital to carry out the required work, I can discuss that with you. But there is no obligation to do so.
Small-business IT
For a small business, an apparently simple IT decision can have much larger consequences.
Replacing a computer, changing Microsoft 365 licences, altering a backup system or making changes to a network can affect your business operations and your ability to recover from a failure.
I can provide an independent assessment before you commit to a significant expenditure or change.
Typical areas include:
-
- Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online
-
- Email and domain configuration
-
- OneDrive and cloud storage
-
- Backup arrangements
-
- Windows PCs and servers
-
- Networks and connectivity
-
- Hardware replacement decisions
-
- IT quotations and proposed upgrades
-
- General small-business IT problems
Why Byte Digital?
I have been working with computers and networks for more than 30 years, dealing with the problems that occur in real businesses and with real users.
That experience matters because troubleshooting isn’t simply a matter of finding an instruction on the internet.
The difficult part is often determining which information is relevant, which possible causes can be eliminated, and whether a proposed solution is actually appropriate.
Modern AI and online resources can provide an enormous amount of technical information. The value of an experienced consultant is knowing how to apply that information to the particular situation in front of you.
